Don't steal, you'll get caught

The Motion Picture Association of America shut down BitTorrent file-sharing site Lokitorrent yesterday and has the site's server logs.

Lokitorrent (mentioned here once) was shut down "because it facilitates the illegal downloading of copyrighted motion pictures." The site's server logs (a record of all the computers which downloaded what when and from where) will no doubt inform the MPAA of who used Lokitorrent for what.

Moral of the story? Things you do on the internet are never anonymous. So if you steal, you can get caught.

Update: Of course, (I thought) it goes without saying that BitTorrent is a fantastic file-sharing technology which can and should be used to legally exchange and share information. Check out the Lifehacker list of BitTorrent search engines here for more info. Thanks Zack!

Update update: There's a good conversation going on at AskMetafilter about this issue: "Let's assume, for a second, that I've maybe used LokiTorrent a few times to download a few things. How traceable am I?"
