While digging through my links today I came across an article on DIY photography that I somehow missed. It's from a great online 'zine called Design In Flight and it's by talented designer Nate Steiner.

Nate walks the reader through setting up a low budget studio, lighting, getting to know your camera and all it's features, as well as tips on working with professionals. He does this in a clear yet detailed and informative way that I quite enjoyed. He tops it off with a useful shopping list.
