An Easy Substitute for Half-and-Half with Ingredients You Already Have

Half-and-half is a vital part of American coffee culture, but that's not all the dairy product is good for: it comes in handy when cooking things both savory and sweet, from chowders and pasta sauces to French toast and ice cream. But if you can't get your hands on any, here's the next best solution.

At The Kitchn, food and cooking editor Christine Gallary explored a handful of stand-ins for half-and-half. She made her own version of the ingredient (which, in case you're wondering, is one part whole milk to one part light cream), then compared the original to various combinations, like whole milk and heavy cream, or melted butter and whole milk.

The best substitute (and the most practical), she discovered, is to mix 2/3 cup skim or low-fat milk with 1/3 heavy cream. The combination stood up well not just on its own, but also in a cup of coffee and in place of half-and-half in cooking. more half-and-half substitution ideas, head to the link below.
